About
I, Tom Tenney, am a producer, performer, writer, community & social media professional, and digital media dilettante (digitante?). As a result of wearing so many hats, I spend a lot of time thinking about the complex relationships between all of these things – art, culture, media… I am also the Senior Producer of Community and Social Networking at VH1, and the founder of Toxic Pop, a weekly newsletter and online community for NYC performance artists.
As a TV professional (and fan), one of my greatest interests at the moment is the convergence of television/film and digital media – how we are moving into an era when stories will be told across many platforms including online, mobile, & games, a phenomenon dubbed Transmedia Storytelling by Prof. Henry Jenkins at MIT. The internet has empowered fan communities to move from the role of passive consumer to active participant, and my belief is that media networks, momentarily terrified by the threat that digital media poses to their supremacy, will eventually recognize the tremendous opportunity that is now opening up before them. An opportunity to embrace their fans, to empower and collaborate with them in ways never before possible.
